Year End Review 2025: Indian Railways
Building a Future-Ready Network: Innovation, Safety, and Passenger-Centric Growth Redefine Rail Travel in India
As 2025 concludes, Indian Railways stands as a powerful testament to transformational progress. This year was defined by a historic low in accidents, the imminent launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper, record-breaking freight performance, and the completion of landmark engineering projects like the new Pamban Bridge and the USBRL. With a relentless focus on safety, passenger experience, and indigenisation, Indian Railways has laid a robust foundation for a world-class network, ready to propel India’s growth in 2026 and beyond.
Visualizing the transformation of Indian Railways in 2025A Year of Unprecedented Safety & Passenger Assurance
2025 will be remembered as the year Indian Railways achieved a historic safety milestone. Consequential train accidents plummeted to just 11 in 2025-26 (up to November), down from an average of 171 per annum between 2004-14. This remarkable feat is underpinned by a tripled safety budget and technological shields.
2025 By The Numbers: The Scale of Transformation
Revolutionizing Passenger Travel: Speed, Comfort & Cuisine
The Vande Bharat & Amrit Bharat Revolution
The crown jewel of 2025’s announcement is the imminent Vande Bharat Sleeper, set to redefine overnight AC travel. Alongside, the network of premium trains expanded with 15 new Vande Bharat and 13 new Amrit Bharat express trains, bringing comfort to non-AC passengers at high speeds.
- Local Cuisine Initiative: Introducing regional taste and hygiene in train catering.
- RailOne App: A one-stop solution for tickets, tracking, e-catering, and porter services.
- Free Wi-Fi: Available at 6,117 stations.
World-Class Stations & Digital Reforms
Under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, 155 stations now offer airport-like facilities: wider concourses, lifts/escalators, modern waiting halls, and food courts. Aadhaar-based authentication has been implemented to curb touts, with 5.73 crore suspicious IRCTC IDs deactivated.
Solar Leadership: 2,626 stations are now solar-powered, with 898 MW capacity driving greener operations.
Engineering Marvels & National Connectivity
2025 witnessed the dedication of 42 projects worth over ₹25,000 crore, strengthening the rail spine of the nation.
- USBRL & Kashmir Connectivity: The 272 km Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla link, featuring the world’s highest Chenab Bridge, now provides all-weather rail access to the Valley.
- Northeast on the Rail Map: The 51 km Bairabi–Sairang line links Aizawl, Mizoram, to the national network, inaugurated with a direct Rajdhani Express to Delhi.
- New Pamban Bridge: India’s first vertical-lift rail sea bridge (2.08 km) replaces the century-old structure, enhancing pilgrimage connectivity and future India-Sri Lanka prospects.
- Track Renewal & Electrification: 6,880 km of new rails laid; 99.2% of Broad Gauge network now electrified, surpassing China (82%).
Freight: The Engine of India’s Economic Growth
Indian Railways solidified its position as the world’s 2nd largest freight carrier, inching towards a 3,000 MT annual loading target.
Historic Firsts: The first foodgrain freight train reached Anantnag (Kashmir), and the first automobile rake carried cars to Sairang (Mizoram), unlocking new logistics corridors.
Indigenisation & Technological Supremacy
The ‘Make in India’ momentum in rail manufacturing is unstoppable:
- Locomotive Factories: Madhepura (Alstom) and Marhowra (Wabtec) PPP plants supplied 149 locomotives in 2025-26, with Marhowra exporting to Guinea.
- LHB Coach Surge: Over 4,224 modern LHB coaches produced in 2025-26 (up to Nov), an 18% increase.
- High-Speed Rail Progress: The Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project achieved 55.63% physical progress, with 330 km of girder launching completed.
RPF: Guardians of Passenger Security & Service
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) exemplified commitment through focused operations:
- Operation Nanhe Faristey: 17,231 children rescued.
- Jeevan Raksha: 2,868 lives saved on railway premises.
- Operation Amanat: ₹79.85 Cr worth of passenger luggage recovered & returned.
- Mahila Suraksha: 1,10,940 persons arrested for trespassing in ladies’ compartments.
- Operation NARCOS: ₹208 Cr worth of narcotics seized.
- Over 3.76 Lakh passenger complaints addressed via Helpline 182 and Twitter.
As we step into 2026, Indian Railways does so with the confidence of a system transformed. The promise of sleeper Vande Bharat trains, the relentless expansion of safety systems like Kavach, and the continued focus on freight-led economic growth chart a clear course. Indian Railways is not just moving people and goods; it is moving the nation decisively towards a future of safety, sustainability, and superior service.
